To be the Beacon of Hope against Cancer

Dr. D. J. Jussawalla and Mr. Naval Tata founded Indian Cancer Society in 1951 as India’s first voluntary, non-profit organization for Awareness, Detection, Cure and Survivorship of Cancer affected people. Indian Cancer Society began its Karnataka chapter in 1986. It was started by Kishore Rao with a handful of volunteers, and today with its base in Bengaluru, ICS Karnataka has two outreach offices in Mangaluru and Kalaburagi.

ICS is working towards bringing down the cancer incidence and mortality rates in the region through increased awareness levels, early detection and early intervention. Many cancers have a high chance of cure if diagnosed early and treated appropriately.

Cancer is a generic term for a large group of diseases that can affect any part of the body. Other terms used are malignant tumours and neoplasms. Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. Cancer arises from the transformation of normal cells into tumour cells. This is a multi-stage process that generally progresses from a pre-cancerous lesion to a malignant tumour.

About 30% of cancers can be prevented by avoiding risk
factors and implementing prevention strategies.

ICS strongly believes in primordial and primary prevention of Cancer.  Mortality and suffering can also be reduced through early detection of cancer and appropriate treatment and care. Also, as statistics tell us the incidence of cancer increases with age. The facts are alarming.

Why Is It Important To Focus On Oral, Breast And Cervical Cancers?

These 3 cancers have the highest incidences in India

  • In India one woman dies of Breast Cancer every 13 minutes. Breast Cancer is the most prevalent cancer across the world.
  • Cervical Cancer is the 2nd most common cancer among women in India. Majority of the deaths occur in low income countries, and India accounts for one-fourth of deaths world-wide.
  • India contributes to one-third of total Oral cancer cases in the world. 70% of cases are reported in an advanced stage, resulting in low chances of cure. Oral cancer cases are reported five times higher among men as compared to women.

Indian Cancer Society Karnataka, has spread its wings to 18 districts in Karnataka and touched the lives of over 35,000 beneficiaries in the last 5 years.
