Emotional Support to Cancer Patients
and Caregivers

“Sometimes we need someone to simply be there. Not to fix anything or do anything in particular, but just to let us now that we are cared for and supported,” Words of a survivor.

Being diagnosed with cancer is usually accompanied by shock and disbelief. In order to provide emotional support to cancer patients and caregivers and equip them to tide over the difficult times in their fight against cancer, ICS has got together a dedicated group of Volunteers.

Besides shock and disbelief, patients face fear and uncertainty, anger, guilt, resentment, depression, denial, withdrawal and many other emotions. It can have a huge psychological and emotional impact not just on the patients, but also on their families and caregivers.

The effects could be long term and damaging to the psyche of the patient. At such times there is a great need for a sensitive and empathetic person to be around to nudge the patient to have a positive state of mind, because the mind heals as much as medication and treatment do.

With the help of trained faculty, ICS conducts regular Capacity Building Training for Volunteers to give emotional support to cancer survivors and care-givers. Read about the counsellors’ experiences in the blog section.
